About US

We are the firefighters of the City of Houma Fire Department. Houma is located in southern Louisiana, about 60 miles south-west of New Orleans. Our city has a population of about 35,000 and sits in the 2nd largest parish (county) in Louisiana. 75% of the department are Local 1405 members. We have over 45 firefighters divided into three 24 hour shifts. Each shift is divided into four station crews within the city limits. Each station has a crew made up of a Captain, Fire Equipment Operator (F.E.O.), and at least one Firefighter. Besides the station crews, we have floaters that stay on one shift and float from station to station to cover for people on vacation. We have two stations on both the east and west sides of the city. We also have a central station located downtown, which houses administration. The administration division consist of the Fire Chief, District Fire Chiefs, Fire Prevention & Inspection, Fire Training and Maintenance. We average about 800 calls per year. The department responds to fires, alarms, auto accidents with extrication, and hazardous situations (such as down power lines, gas leaks and chemical spills). Even though we have a few EMTs on the job, our department does not respond to medical calls.

Our administrarion (Central) is the oldest continuously operating station in the city. Central Fire Station opened in 1930 under Fire Chief A.J. Bethancourt. Originaly operating as a fire station and police station, central housed an engine company, the Fire Chief, dispatch and the police department. The police department moved out in the 1970's. The tower that stands in front of Central, originaly had a water tank on top that feed the first pressurized water system in the city. The next oldest continuously operating station is North Houma Fire Station. It opened in 1950 under Fire Chief Leonce Doirin.

We still have the City of Houma's first motorized fire engine. This American LaFrance arrived in 1916 and was dedicated in the name of Effie Jane Hellier, Daughter of Harry Hellier, on July 4, 1918. Mr. Hellier was the Vice-President of the fire company at that time. Some of the original equipment is still on the old engine today. We also still have one of the hand pumpers that was used in the 1880's and 1890's.
